Very crafty genes - Mum

My mother is a crafting Goddess embodying the virtues of creativity, patience and resourcefulness. However, my mother, like myself, suffers from Multiple Crafting Disorder. Casting my mind back through my lifetime, I have seen my mother undertake AT LEAST the following crafts (not in chronological order): throwing wheel clay; china painting; glass slumping; beaded jewellery; quilting; fimo jewellery; bread sculpting; dressmaking; refurbishing furniture; lamp shade decorating; textile picture frames; and soft furnishing. The woman just cannot stick to one thing! And the terrifying part of my mum's Crafting Disorder is that she just about becomes an expert in each hobby before putting it away and moving onto the next.

It is my plan to revisit and recreate some of my mothers most stylish and retro hobbies, so keep coming back to the page to see what I have made.

For those who doubt my mothers versatility here is a small gallery of outfit's made for yours truly during the 80s. (god damn I rock that bob 'n' bangs)

I never really asked mum about her crafting philosophy and she would probably think I was crazy if I did. The impression I get from the outside is that if she see's it and she likes it - she will bloody well make it her self.

Mum even made her own wedding dress, but that was fairly normal in the 70s. Wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses from that time are certainly among my favourite. And mums's dress is one that I would love to wear to my own wedding. Sadly, like the marriage, the dress didn't survive. See those lovely ostrich feather sleeves?... yeah, how nice are they? My sister and I thought they were so nice we would cut them off for costume play. I regret this somewhat but as mum is still talking to us I have to assume she has forgiven us.

Now that all the kids have grown up, mum has a dedicated craft room for herself. It is the source of much jealousy for me. As a first home hunter in Melbourne (one of Australia's most expensive cities) the dream of a dedicated room for my hobbies is largely out of reach. But I can live vicariously through my mothers craft room. This room has shelves literally bursting with fabrics, and assorted bits and pieces sourced over a lifetime of hobbies.

I hope that my craft life is as varied and as enriching as my mums. And I hope the same for you.
