Craftflix - The Vampire Diaries

For many craft time is quite time. For me craft time is crappy television time. I am able to watch a surprising amount of content with complete disregard for quality as I make my little delights.

My latest show has been a deep dive into the supernatural world of Mystic River in The Vampire Diaries. I had never seen an episode until it popped up into my Netflix recommendation. As I write this I have quickly googled and confirmed my suspicion that the series IS actually based on a book - no surprises there.  Wikipedia also tells me that it first aired in 2009 - which IS surprisingly recent and provides no excuses as to why the characters don't seem to have caller photos in their phones.

The Vampire Diaries - in it's written form - pre-dates Twilight. However, the TV series for Diaries was release one year after the first instalment of the Twilight Series. This could explain the similarities of spunky vampire hair-do's which seems to me to be a very important part of being a vampire. Let's take a very quick look at the evolution of vampire do's from monster to hunk...

Set in Mystic Falls - the super natural town where everyone seems to die and no-one seems to notice is the kind of place you want to grow up. Let's meet the players:

elena.jpg

Elena - the nice girl that everyone apparently wants to get with. Main protagonist for most plot lines. Requires much saving and protecting. Doppelganger.

Stefan.jpg

Stefan Salvatore - Hunky hero hair who is a sensitive vampire and does lots of the saving. Has a dark side.

Damon.jpg

Damon Salvatore - the bad boy who falls for his brother's girl. Makes lots of bad decisions. Only character that has a sense of humour. My favourite Salvatore bother.

Jeremy.JPG

Jeremy Gilbert - Elena's younger brother who requires her maternal protection at all times. Bit of a sook and inexplicably becomes super buff but remains sooky.

Bonnie.jpg

Bonnie Bennet - Elena's best friend and most witchy-witch. One of the few person's of colour in the early ep's which highlights the shows glaring lack of diversity and cringing stereotypes. Doesn't like vampires (it's a witch/vampire thing).

caroline.jpg

Caroline Forbes - Cheery, blonde, cheerleader, type A personality. A ray of sunshine in a grim vampire world. Elena's other best friend.

Tyler Lockwood - Werewolf and generally a macho idiot (but that's just his werewolf curse blah blah blah).

Matt.jpg

Matt Donovan - everyone's ex or brother. Hard to know how he survived so long. Works at the Mystic Grill.

alaric.jpg

Alaric 'Rick' Saltzman - teacher, husband, boyfriend, guardian, vampire hunter, professor, drunk, almost husband, father, boyfriend, almost husband.

Klaus.jpg

Klaus Mikaelson - Original Vampire. Evil - or is he??? Hello, spin off.

What can I say? This show is the cheesy, gory delight of teen drama it promises to be. The 155 episodes I have watched so far has provided great company as I sew my new jumpsuit. The writer's are very creative at undoing or contradicting the magical rules that they establish throughout the series. It requires a little attention to detail but there is so much dialogue that you only need to look at the screen to fall into Damon's dreamy eyes. Oh and did I mention in Season 5, Episode 13 at the 5:19 minute mark Damon says 'scrapbooking'  and I almost wanted to take it up...
