Three Eyed Raven Costume

Oh, hello! Haven’t seen you around these parts lately. I admit, I have not posted for a while and I have my reasons. So I’m going to be posting a few catch-up blogs to get up to speed - cause lordy knows I have still been crafting.

Let’s cast our minds back to April 2019. It was a time of innocence. It was a time before we knew the detrimental effects of using ‘natural lighting’ to film a night time episode, a time before we knew heroes could turn on us and plot lines could be rushed a super speeds, a time before we had nothing left to live for (ok - that one is a bit dramatic).

Game of Thrones has been one of those TV shows that really bought people together. My sister has been a fan of the series since day one and was actually the person who got me onto it in the first place. In honour of the final and much anticipated season 8 she decided to host an intimate screening party and guess what - IT WAS DRESS-UPS!!!! My favourite. (look at this couple - they get it!)

I had known for a few months that the party would be a dress-up and the number of options that flowed through my brain was exhausting. The two lead contenders were go as a dragon egg or go as the Three Eyed Raven. In consultation with friends and family it appeared not many people could conceive of how I could pull off an dragon egg costume (I totally could have) and in the end I decided it probably wouldn’t be a good shape for sitting on the couch for an hour.

HOW TO TRANSFORM INTO THE THREE EYED RAVEN

(non-warg style)

Instead of a winged costume I could only wear once I decided to be slightly more sustainable and opted for a handmade lush black velvet dress (with pockets). The dress was made from a pattern I had traced back in December 2018 from one of my favourite Gorman dresses. I had made a version for Christmas so I knew that it would all work out - approximately. I selected a black stretch velvet from Spotlight and it felt soooooooo nice. I did my first bias binding neckline and was very chuffed with myself. As a tribute to the ruffles of a birds feathers I added a ruffle to the hem of the dress. This was my first time working with a velvet fabric and I completely neglected to realise that, of course, there is a ‘nap’ to velvet fabric. So don’t look too close or you may realise the front and the back are napping in opposite directions.

But how to create a third eye? I suck at make-up so I wasn’t going to try and do anything to artistic but I did want something creative and relatively cheap. I googled bird masks but most of them were beak focused or covered all of your face. Remembering back to a masked engagement party I went to many years ago I recalled that you could buy eye masks pretty cheap at a $2 shop. So that is what I did.

The only colour they had was silver so I bought that. With some back cardboard from my cupboard I folded and kept folding until I had a suitable beak shape and length then used sticky-tape to attach it to the mask. From there I used some of my acrylic paint to paint it black. Then it was time to break out the glitter. I had a lovely black glitter so I covered the mask in PVA and glittered the Winterfell out of it. When that was dry I chucked on a googly third eye. Just to be a bit more extra I whipped up a Rachel Burke inspired black pipe-cleaner crown. The accessories took about one day to complete.

Could it be any easier/cheaper?! tweet tweet.
